BioTE® Hormone Replacement

Pellet therapy, otherwise known as BioTE® hormone replacement therapy, uses biological hormones derived to replicate the body's normal hormonal levels. Patients have found that bioidentical hormone replacement therapy with pellet implants is extremely effective. These pellets, some of which are smaller than a grain of rice, are placed in the fatty tissue beneath the skin and closely mimic the actions of healthy ovaries and testicles with regard to hormone release into the bloodstream. Hormone pellet implantation is an easily performed office procedure.

Cardiovascular Risk Assessment

Cardiovascular risk assessment includes tests and health factors that have been proven to indicate a person's chance of having a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke. They have been refined to indicate the degree of risk: slight, moderate, or high.

Perhaps the most important indicators for cardiac risk are those of a person's personal health history. These include:

  • Age
  • Family history
  • Weight
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Blood pressure
  • Diet
  • Exercise, physical activity
  • Diabetes

The carotid arteries are the two main arteries that carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the brain. These two blood vessels extend through each side of the neck. Carotid artery disease occurs when plaque (a buildup of fat, cholesterol, and other substances) collects and forms along the walls of the carotid arteries.

Screening examinations are tests performed to find disease before symptoms begin. The goal of screening is to detect disease at its earliest and most treatable stage. At Barrick Family Practice we use a type of ultrasound imaging called carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) ultrasound to capture pictures of the carotid arteries, measure the thickness of the two innermost layers (the intima and media) of the carotid artery walls, and help identify plaque buildup. An abnormal thickening of the artery walls may signal the development of cardiovascular disease.
